What is an excursion?

What is an excursion?

In the world of climbing, an “excursion” is a trip or hike to a new location for climbing. Typically this involves hiking to a crag, maybe with a rope and rack you would not usually have taken.

It can also include making a quick jaunt over to another cliff for some bouldering action. It can also involve driving to a new cliff for some sport, trad, or bouldering.

An “excursion” is any trip taken exceeding the 1-mile distance you feel like you are walking to get to the nearest climbing area (assuming you’re wearing your climbing shoes).

Don’t forget that 1 mile is about 2 km.

Why would anyone take an excursion? It’s all about exploring new areas! Someone might also be interested in climbing the same rock they’ve climbed for years, but at a different time of year or day of the week where fewer people are around, making it more enjoyable. An “excursion” is also an opportunity to climb with another person that isn’t available regularly. Maybe you have one climbing partner but would like to go climbing with someone else for the day.

Or maybe it’s time to be social (hike up in your Chacos) and watch someone else climb instead of always getting your own rope time. For this website, we define an “excursion” as any trip taken out to a new destination for the purposes of climbing outside: sport, trad, bouldering, etc.

What about local crags where I’ve climbed many times? Have they still considered an “excursion”?

If you’re familiar with the area, you’ve climbed there multiple times, it is close to home, and you have your gear packed in your vehicle or at least on your body, then you are probably not taking an “excursion.” If the crag is more than a mile from where you park but still within reach of walking, bicycle, or public transportation, then it’s probably still an “excursion.”

So there you have it! Thanks to the climbing community for the most upvoted submission on reddit.com/r/climb!

This is a great definition that will come in handy when trying to describe your day of climbing (or lack thereof) to your friends.

Hope you enjoyed! Stay tuned for next weeks blog post.

See you then!
